phil spectors so called "wall of sound" was a joke. All he did was add more people to the recording. having multiple guitars and other instruments all playing at the same time instead of overdubbing. im pretty sure this sound was then pumped into some kind of echo chamber to give it an even fuller sound.

You're thinking of Phil Spector, who was known for his studio work (including Beatles' Let It Be). The "wall of sound" spoken of here refers to GD's live set-up in '74. Isn't it great to see how the Dead have become such a fabric of society? I even heard them in the grocery store recently.
